Macadamia

One of the estates that cultivate macadamias in Indonesia is PT Perkebunan Nusantara XII (PTPN XII). The estate which is located on Ijen Mountain, Bondowoso Regency, East Java Province, runs 12.000 trees on a land measuring 120 ha.

The state-owned estate (Badan Usaha Milik Negara, BUMN) under the Ministry of Forestry plants macadamias gradually. In 1990, the company cultivated 8.000 trees or equal to 80 ha at Blawan block. The population there reached 100 trees per ha. In 1995, it was a 40 ha land at Kalimasjampit block turn to be planted with 4.000 seedlings. After tasting the peculiar taste of macadamias, PTPN XII propagated the trees from seeds in 1989. "Not only that it has a good business prospect, macadamias make suitable coffee shaders," Ir Setyo Wuryono, the Down-Stream manager, said.

According to Tirtoboma, a researcher of the Indonesian Biotechnology Research Institute for Estate Crops (Pusat Penelitian Bioteknologi Perkebunan), a tree grown from seed will yield its first production by the age of 6 years old; and through cutting and grafting at 5 years old. During that time, the production is 0,5 kg of dry seed per tree per year. The production volume keeps increasing as the tree grows old. At 7 years old, the production rises to 0,7-0,8 kg, at 10 years old (1-1,1 kg), and at 15 years old (1,3-1,7 kg). The production will be stable by the age of 20 years old (1,7-1,9 kg). (A.
